Ormoc to Create Local Blood Council
Ormoc City, Leyte (PNA) — The city health office (CHO) here will organize the various sectors to form a Local Blood Council (LBC) to assure the provision of sufficient blood supply for the city patients.
Lourdes Lampong of CHO said there is a need to create the council because of high maternal death in the city.
There have been 252 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births and one of its causes is blood loss due to post-partum hemorrhage. “It is high time to save the lives of our mothers,” Lampong said.
If pushed through, the LBC aims to keep a stock of blood equivalent to at least one percent of the requirement of the 203,922 2014 projected city population.
The blood donations would not only save mother and child cases, but also dengue and wounded patients, according to Lampong.
Winnie Dorego, National Voluntary Blood Services program (NVBSP) regional coordinator, motivated everyone to advocate and support the program.
Having heard the commitment of the different sectors, Ruby Gernale of Philippine Red Cross Ormoc Chapter was pleased. She then suggested the city council (through LBC) to create a local ordinance supporting the continuing professional education.
This program initiated by the Department of Health through the CHO wanted to achieve the goal of improving the health status of Ormoc residents, targeting the zero death due to hemorrhage and get the Sandugo Award. (PNA) FFC/SQM/ELVIE R. ROA
