NYC Supports Call to Lower Earth’s Temperature to 1.5 Degree Celsius

The National Youth Commission’s Committee on Environment supports the call to further decrease the earth’s temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius to avert the dangers posed by global warming.

This amplifies further the NYC’s #nowph (not on our watch) advocacy which seeks to enhance public awareness on climate change by promoting the practice of climate-resilient and climate-smart lifestyles. This is in support of the Philippine government’s position calling for a world cap of not more than two degrees Celsius to the global temperature.

“We welcome the development in the Philippines’ position as we call on the world leaders, most especially those from the highly industrialized nations to seriously consider a higher cap on the intended nationally determined contribution to gas emissions,” said Assistant Secretary Jose Sixto Dantes III, NYC Committee on Environment chairman.

The current base temperature of the earth is .8 degree Celsius and if carbon gas emissions remain at uncontrollable levels, the risk of further loss of human life and property will be imminent.

“We hope that world leaders will find sense and wisdom in this call because coastal countries like the Philippines bear the brunt of the ill effects of too much carbon gas emission judging from the series of typhoons and other calamities that hit many countries,” said Dantes.

Meanwhile, the #nowph campaign has gained momentum through the support of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the House of Representatives and the Senate. These entities issued separate statements of support to the #nowph campaign.

Earlier, Malacañang issued Presidential Proclamation 1160 declaring November 25 of every year as the “National Day for Youth in Climate Action” that mandates the NYC and the Climate Change Commission to spearhead activities and mobilize the youth to engage in climate change activities.

Hence, the NYC is set to commemorate the #nowph day on November 25, 2015 by mobilizing more than a thousand students to form a human banner to dramatize the call for climate action at the Rizal National High School in Pasig City at 7:30 a.m. (NYC)
