Nursing Tips for Breastfeeding Mothers
Breast milk contains live and defensive white blood cells and antibodies which protect the baby from allergies and infections by boosting immunity. It is also the most hygienic form of feeding your baby, with no container and no sterilization involved. Here are some tips for breastfeeding mothers.
Avoid Sore Nipples: It is very important to use the proper technique, in order to avoid sore nipples. This involves the lower part of the breast and areola, where the nipple makes contact with the baby’s high palette, which stimulates sucking.
Positions for Breastfeeding: The most popular positions are the cradle hold, cross cradle hold and football hold.
Feeding Time: Never watch the clock to see how long your baby is nursing. Follow your instincts. Feed your baby if he/she is crying even if you have just finished feeding him/her.
Burping: After breastfeeding, it is very important to burp the child, as this will help ease the painful gas bubbles that might form after the child is fed.
Hygiene: Simply rinse the breasts, areola and nipple with clean water while having your daily bath is sufficient. Avoid using soap or disinfectants on the nipple and areola as it may dry the skin leading to sore nipples. Our body naturally secretes an oily substance which protects the nipples from drying and prevents infection. Don’t wash this substance. Rubbing a small amount of breast milk after feeding keeps the nipples lubricated. Consult your doctor if your skin is sore, too dry or painful.
