No More Speakers? New OLED Tech Generates Audio from Pixels

Imagine watching a movie where the sound doesn’t come from external speakers but directly from the screen itself. Thanks to South Korean scientists at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), this futuristic concept is now a reality with Pixel-Based Local Sound OLED (PLSOLED)—a groundbreaking technology that enables OLED screens to produce sound from each individual pixel.

How PLSOLED Works
Traditional OLED displays focus solely on visual quality, but PLSOLED integrates ultra-thin piezo exciters within each pixel, allowing the screen to generate sound without the need for external speakers. Unlike conventional speaker systems, which rely on large drivers and soundbars, PLSOLED vibrates specific areas of the screen to create localized audio, meaning different parts of the display can emit distinct sounds simultaneously.

This innovation eliminates sound crosstalk, a common issue in multi-speaker setups where audio signals interfere with each other.

The research team successfully demonstrated PLSOLED on a 13-inch OLED panel, similar to those used in laptops and tablets. This breakthrough could revolutionize how sound is delivered in smartphones, TVs, laptops, and even automotive displays, leading to slimmer, more power-efficient devices.

Professor Su Seok Choi, who led the research, believes PLSOLED could become a core feature of next-generation devices, enabling sleek, lightweight designs while delivering high-fidelity audio. The technology is particularly promising for bezel-less OLED TVs, where integrating traditional speakers is challenging.

While still in early development, PLSOLED has the potential to replace conventional speaker systems in many applications. Researchers are now working on scaling the technology for larger displays, ensuring it can be implemented in home entertainment systems, gaming monitors, and even augmented reality interfaces.

With its ability to merge visuals and audio seamlessly, PLSOLED represents a major leap forward in display technology. As manufacturers explore ways to integrate this innovation into consumer products, the future of sound-emitting screens is closer than ever.
