No Demolition yet on Tabunok Market, Admin Says
The Talisay City Public Information Office Wednesday clarified that the Tabunok Public Market building will not be demolished just yet.
“Naa nay resolution for that but you can’t immediately demolish the building without prior consultation,” said PIO chief Vincie Monterde.
Monterde’s statement came after vendors, who want to transfer to this old market, were up in arms again to protest the demolition saying they should be transferred first before it happens. Monterde said their greatest fear is that once the old market building is gone, their hopes would also follow.
“But the demolition would only make way for a new market building,” he explained. But the vendors, who are still selling at the Lagtang Public Market, said they did not hear any explanation, as according to them they have to transfer as soon as possible as what the administration had promised to them during the campaign.
They said if the old market building is unfit for use then they could display their goods outside using makeshift stalls. They also said they would do it even while the new building is being constructed.
Monterde said the construction of the new building may start anytime this year, with the funds coming from the national government. But as to the city allowing the vendors to stay right next to where the construction site would be, is a problem that the mayor has to address in the coming days.
