Naga Prepares Early Evacuation

Following Cebu Governor Hilario Davide III and the Commission on Higher Education’s order on Wednesday suspending classes in the entire province on Thursday and Friday due to super typhoon “Yolanda”, the cities of Talisay and Naga have also followed suit by suspending classes in all levels, public and private, in the elementary and high school.

Vince Monterde, Talisay City’s spokesperson said there is no need for Mayor Johnny delos Reyes to issue an order as they are covered by the governor’s earlier announcement, as they are under the province. The same also in Naga, said public information-designate, Garry Cabotaje, in a text message.

As early as Wednesday, before Super Typhoon Yolanda is expected to hit the province, Naga has set to “Evacuation rather than rescue” mode, said Cabotaje.

The City Hall building is the local disaster council’s operations center with Engr. Joveno Garcia as the head, he said.

“The city gymnasium, covered badminton courts and all schools serve as evacuation centers”, added Cabotaje.

“Ready-to-eat food, medicine ad drinking water are already in place in these areas,” Cabotaje said.

Meanwhile, Cabotaje said the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the local police have already advised those living in the low-lying, coastal and landslide-prone areas to go to the nearest evacuation centers.

The city also has its ambulances, rescue teams and heavy equipment on standby, he added.
