Mpox in Cebu: Understanding the Situation and Staying Safe

Published

on

Cebu has recently reported its first confirmed case of Mpox in Talisay City, where the patient unfortunately passed away due to other health complications, not Mpox itself. Meanwhile, Mandaue City is monitoring a suspected case involving a 39-year-old man with persistent skin lesions. Health officials have assured the public that the situation is under control and that proper precautions are being taken.

What is Mpox?
Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral disease that spreads through close contact with an infected person or contaminated objects. The symptoms typically appear within 5 to 21 days after exposure and may include:

  • Skin rashes or lesions (often starting on the face and spreading to other parts of the body)
  • Fever
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Fatigue
  • Back pain

The virus can spread through skin-to-skin contact, respiratory droplets, and contaminated surfaces. While Mpox is generally less severe than smallpox, it can still cause complications, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems.

How to Protect Yourself
Health officials in Cebu are urging residents to stay calm but vigilant. Here’s what you can do to protect yourself and others:

  • Practice good hygiene: Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use alcohol-based sanitizers.
  • Avoid close contact: If someone has symptoms, maintain distance and avoid direct skin contact.
  • Wear a mask: This can help reduce the risk of respiratory transmission.
  • Disinfect surfaces: Clean commonly touched objects and areas regularly.
  • Seek medical attention: If you develop symptoms, isolate immediately and consult a healthcare provider.

Government Response and Public Awareness
The Department of Health (DOH) and local health offices are actively monitoring cases and conducting contact tracing. Officials have reassured the public that Mpox is manageable with proper care and quarantine measures. Cebu residents are encouraged to stay informed and follow health guidelines to prevent further spread.

While Mpox is not as contagious as COVID-19, it is still important to take preventive measures and remain cautious.
