Monsoon Rains Trigger Flash Floods in Cotabato, Maguindanao
Cotabato City(PNA) –- Southwest monsoon triggered knee-deep to waist deep floods in Cotabato City and in some areas in Maguindanao, the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (RDRRMC) in the autonomous region on Thursday said.
In its report, Ramil Masukat, RDRRMC chair in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), said flash floods hit a remote village in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao after the Tanuel Spring overflowed.
Masukat said no casualty was reported but the floods in the communities nearby forced brief evacuation of civilians. They returned when the water subsided.
A day-long moderate to heavy rains on Tuesday forced education officials in Cotabato City to suspend classes while low-lying villages Barangay Rosary Heights 6, Bagua 3, Poblacion 2, 3, 4, Rosary Heights Mother Barangay, Rosary Heights 2, and Tamontataka 2, 3 and 5 were submerged by flood water.
Aniceto Rasalan, speaking for Cotabato City Mayor Japal Guiani, said no evacuation was reported and that the water level in affected villages had subsided.
Cotabato City served as catch basin of flood waters from North Cotabato, Maguindanao and Sultan Kudarat.
Flash floods was also reported in the coastal town of Malabang in Lanao del Sur but no casualty was reported, the RDRRMC-ARMM said in its report. (PNA) JBP/NYP
