Minglanilla Not Ready for Cityhood
The town is already qualified to become a city, but if outgoing Minglanilla Mayor Eduardo Selma would have his way, he would not allow his town to go through the process just yet.
Selma said Minglanilla is not yet ready to become a city. He also fears the increase in taxes, which always comes with cityhood, would not do good for his people. Selma’s statement came after investors hinted of making a reclamation project in the town but only if it levels up to become a city.
Outgoing first district Rep. Eduardo Gullas had earlier said it takes years for Minglanilla to be ready to become a city. Its population may be within the requisites for a town to be converted into a cityhood, but Gullas said there are other factors like income in which the town still falls short of. Under the Local Government Code, a town must have at least P100 million income to qualify. Gullas has already converted three towns into cities out of six local government units in his district (Talisay, Naga and Carcar). He said maybe five to 10 years from today, Minglanilla will be the fourth.
