Metrocebunews.com Observes ‘One Year After Typhoon Yolanda’

Published

Today, exactly a year ago or on November 8, 2013, Typhoon Yolanda was recorded as one of the strongest typhoon to hit the country, wreak havoc in Visayas region affecting our brethren in Northern Cebu and Eastern Visayas.

The typhoon made the first of its six landfalls in Eastern Samar, ravaging the region in its wake leaving a total of 6,000 people dead.

MetroCebu News, an embryonic news site at that time, bugged down as Cebu City’s electric current went unplugged as a matter of precaution. With undaunted thirst to deliver news and updates of the brewing storm, the sudden strong wind or gust of Yolanda only left us in the narrow spaces of despair: anxious, helpless but hopeful. Like a headwind that blows one in the opposite direction, our desire to bring stories and updates was impaired by technology’s potent ally- electricity.

Phone service signals were disturb, making the anachronistic vhf radio transceiver a viable means of communication. Facebook users were unhappy as gale and gusty winds slaughtered internet lines. Twitter could hardly override Yolanda’s wind speed of over 235 kph.

Until today, efforts to rebuild are still flowing. International help keeps on coming. Past lessons are still worth learning.

On this commemoration, Metrocebunews.com is in unison with our brothers and sisters who look back not because of their loss but to celebrate the triumph and endurance of humanity.
