Meta’s Threads Reaches 175 Million Monthly Active Users in First Year
Meta’s newest social media platform Threads, designed for microblogging and an answer to Elon Musk’s “X,” formerly Twitter, has now reached 175 million monthly active users (MAU) in its first year, the company announced on Wednesday.
Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, made the announcement of the new milestone on a thread.
“Threads now has more than 175M monthly actives. What a year,” Zuckerberg said.
Threads launched in July 2023 with the ambition of becoming a major player in the social media landscape. Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, expressed high hopes for the platform, aiming to surpass the user base of X which had over 300 million users at the time.
While not quite reaching the billion-user target Zuckerberg envisioned as of late, Threads has still seen steady growth.
The platform allows users to share text posts up to 500 characters long, along with links, photos, and videos up to five minutes in length. Moreover, it integrates with Instagram, allowing users to connect with existing friends and follow new creators based on shared interests.
“Our vision with Threads is to take what Instagram does best and expand that to text, creating a positive and creative space to express your ideas,” Meta stated in a press release upon launch.
Threads garnered significant initial interest, boasting 10 million sign-ups within the first seven hours. This early enthusiasm translated into user growth, with Zuckerberg mentioning during an April earnings call that the platform had surpassed 150 million MAU and was “growing well.” (GFB)
