Mega Cebu Collaborates with OECD for Green Growth

To foster urban green growth in Cebu, Mega Cebu will hold an event together with the leaders of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in December.

The event is Mega Cebu’s contribution for being a part of the Urban Green Growth in Dynamic Asia Project, an OECD study that explores ways to foster green growth in fast-growing cities in Asia.

Mega Cebu has been identified, nominated and invited by the OECD as the project’s fifth case study along with four other cities in Asia, namely Bangkok, Thailand; Johor Bahru/Iskandar, Malaysia; Bandung, Indonesia; and Hai Phong, Vietnam.

To participate in the study, Cebu is expected to contribute a monetary counterpart of 50,000 Euros and is required to host the study team for the duration of the study, provide the team with the needed data, organize a local counterpart team, and co-organize a peer learning workshop to which the other participating cities will be invited.

The total cost of the study is 200,000 Euros, of which the German Government and OECD itself have pledged to contribute the balance of 150,000 Euros.

The output of this study will be a report entitled “Green Growth in Cebu, the Philippines.” The report will consider a theme affecting Cebu’s green competitiveness and recommend policies to be implemented.

The Urban Green Growth in Dynamic Asia Project will focus on the policies needed for Metro Cebu’s social and economic development and will complement and further outline the existing JICA-assisted Roadmap Study’s recommendations on a chosen focus area from a policy-focused perspective.

Both of these studies together will provide the blueprint for Cebu’s holistic and sustainable development.

The Urban Green Growth in Dynamic Asia Project fosters green growth in fast-growing cities in Asia by examining policies to promote greening and competitiveness in a fast-growing economy, to improve environmental performance in cities and urban quality of life and to increase the institutional capacity to achieve green growth.

OECD is an organization that provides a forum in which governments can work together to share experiences and seek solutions to common problems.

It works with governments to understand what drives economic, social and environmental change. It also measures productivity and global flows of trade and investment as well as analyzes and compares data to predict future trends and set international standards on a wide range of things from agriculture and tax to the safety of chemicals.
