Marcos, Zelenskyy Holds Talk in Much-Anticipated Phone Call
The much-anticipated talk between Philippine president Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has now come to fruition as both presidents held their first official talk through a phone call.
The phone call was centered around the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, where reports of a new Russian offensive are now underway.
Both leaders also talked about cooperation on international platforms, according to Zelenskyy.
Zelenskyy also said that the phone call between him and Marcos is the first phone call made in the history of Ukraine-Philippine relations.
“Had the first phone call in the history of bilateral relations with President of the Philippines @bongbongmarcos. Thanked him for supporting the sovereignty & territorial integrity of (Ukraine). We discussed further deepening of cooperation, in particular on international platforms.”
Meanwhile, Marcos said that the country admires the bravery and nationalism of the Ukrainian people and that the country will join the effort in reaching a peaceful end to the conflict.
“I had the pleasure of talking to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy yesterday. I told him that we in the Philippines are watching with admiration, the bravery and the nationalism that has been displayed by the Ukrainians during this crisis and that we join in his effort to reach a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in his country,” Marcos tweeted Tuesday.
He added “Mr. President, we are with you in your search for peace.”
After taking a neutral stand during the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the Philippines has since then made a reversal on its policy regarding the conflict. The country has voted yes on multiple United Nations resolutions condemning Russia for the invasion. (GFB)
