Marcos Leads Groundbreaking Ceremony for Cebu Bus Rapid Transit Project
On Monday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the Cebu Bus Rapid Transit (CBRT) project. The project aims to alleviate traffic congestion in Cebu City and offer commuters a safer and quicker mode of transportation.
During the ceremony, President Marcos commended the Department of Transportation (DOTr) for initiating the first bus rapid transit system in the country. He also expressed his gratitude to the Chinese government, the World Bank, and the French Development Agency for their support.
The civil works for Package I of the project were officially launched at the event. The package comprises the construction of a 2.38-kilometer segregated bus lane with four bus stations and a 1.15-kilometer pedestrian improvement that will link the CBRT System to the Port of Cebu.
The CBRT system will consist of three packages, accommodating 83 12-meter buses in its opening year, with plans for expansion in the future. President Marcos emphasized that the project would not only provide convenience to the people but also improve the working conditions and provide greater opportunities for public transport drivers.
Marcos assured the attendees that the BRT system had been thoroughly planned and studied by the national and Cebu City governments across different administrations. He noted that it is modeled after other advanced and progressive cities’ BRT systems like Seoul and Guangzhou.
The President emphasized the importance of the project for economic development and urged the DOTr and other stakeholders to complete the project within the targeted timeline. He also reminded the DOTr to ensure the fair compensation of property owners and to relocate the affected informal settler families suitably.
