Mandaue City’s Economy Slowly Recovering

Despite the continuous threat brought about by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the City of Mandaue in Cebu is moving forward to slowly recover economically after the pandemic brought vast devastation to the economy.

“We are now on GCQ (general community quarantine). Businesses have started to reopen and the industries have started to ramp up their capacities,” said Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Steven Yu during the Mugstoria Ta program aired on the Facebook page of the Office of the Presidential Assistant for the Visayas (OPAV).

Yu admitted that the pandemic has slowed down the economic activities in the City but he also pointed out that the city’s strong industrial base contributed much to recovery.

“Recovery is in progress now but much still needs to be done to return to pre-COVID levels,” Yu added.

Mandaue City is known to be the home of big processed-food manufacturers and exporters not only in the Visayas but in the whole country.

“Although we have tourism and retail shops that were affected but at least it was balanced out with our industrial businesses and BPOs,” he said.

However, most industrial companies are currently operating with 70% capacity. (MLC)
