Males More Prone to Kidney Diseases – DOH
Legazpi City -– Males with kidney diseases outnumber their female counterparts at the ratio of 60:40, according to the Department of Health Bicol regional official.
Dr. Evy Sarmiento of the DOH-Bicol said that in 2012 when they had their last recorded data, for instance, their agency listed 499 patients who underwent dialysis and 60 percent of them were male.
Sarmiento cited as causes the vices of some male patients and their habit of submitting to late check-up, whereas the female patients are careful with their health and consult with doctors early.
Among those prone to these diseases are elders with diabetes or high blood pressure.
Many of those with kidney diseases belong to the age bracket of 51-61 years old and second are those between 21 to 30 years old.
There were seven patients whose age was only seven years old.
Camarines Sur had the highest recorded cases, with 255; and Albay, 187.
The Bicol region placed seventh among the 13 regions with high cases of kidney diseases and 300 patients dying every year, the data said.
One problem is that only a few government offices have dialysis center for kidney diseases, Sarmiento said.
With June being celebrated as Kidney Month, the DOH has been going around the six provinces of the region to explain how the public can avoid the increasing number of kidney diseases. (PNA) LAP/FGS/AMM/CBD
