Making W.A.V.ES. in First Mega Cebu Month Celebration
The first celebration of the Mega Cebu Month was concluded with an Awards Night, held at the Cebu Cultural Center last September 25, 2013.
The event featured performances from the different contest participants and winners of the Heart of Worship Chorale Competition and the Jingle-Making Contest. Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, Cordova City Mayor Adelino Sitoy, and Minglanilla City Mayor Elanito Pena and other dignitaries of the 13 Local Government Units (LGUs) in Metro Cebu (Carcar City, San Fernando, City of Naga, Minglanilla, Talisay City, Cebu City, Mandaue City, Lapu-Lapu City, Cordova, Consolacion, Compostela, Lilo-an, and Danao City) graced the awarding ceremonies of the contest winners for the movement’s first ever month-long celebration.
Academic and Literary Contests
The Academic and Literary Contests, held for two days at the Cebu Cultural Center, aimed to raise awareness on the Mega Cebu program and to challenge the knowledge, skills, attitude/values of students on the movement’s vision and attributes, as follows: Cultural & Innovative, Creative & Competitive, Inclusive, Equitable & Livable, Interconnected & Compact, Green, Integrated, Coordinated & Participative.

For the high school quiz bowl, Cebu City National Science High School bagged the first place, Consolacion National High School second, and Cordova Catholic Cooperative School in third place. Lanipga National High School in Consolacion won the poster-making contest with Ocaňa National High School in second place and Compostela Science and Technology High School in third place. Hannah Mae Corpuz (Cebu City National Science High School) garnered first place in the oratorical contest while Gian Bo Luchavez (St. Dominic Child Learning Center, Cordova) and Rodamee Otadoy (Consolacion National High School) ran in second and third places, respectively.
For the college-level competitions, Southwestern University won the quiz bowl, while the University of the Visayas – Main Campus and Cebu Normal University came in second and third place, respectively. Rhea Kristine Elnar, an Education student of the University of San Carlos finished first place in the painting contest while her fellow Carolinian, Jay Ann Cortes came in second place. Jestoni Septimo of Southwestern University finished third place in the same competition. In the extemporaneous speaking competition open both to high school and college students, Ryuichi Buot of the Compostela Science and Technology High School finished won first place, Shairah Bacus of Talisay City Science High School in second, and Justin Mikhail Hermosisima of the Cebu City National Science High School earned third place.
Photo Contest
In the first phase of the Photo Plus competition, Erwin Lim’s photograph of an ancestral home in Carcar City won first place. A photo of the old White Gold in North Reclamation Area, Cebu City by Casilda de Larrazabal won second place while Richie Atillo’s photo of the Vision Theatre in Colon Street, Cebu City finished third.

The photographers will be teaming up with students who will digitally manipulate the chosen seven finalists, which include the winning photos, into their individual vision of Cebu in 2050 in phase two of the competition.
Choral Competition
Praise Cathedral choir won first place in the Heart of Worship Chorale Competition held last September 21 at the Cebu Cultural Center. The Church of Our King choir garnered second place while Living Word – Punta came in third place. The cash prizes of the winning groups as well as the nine consolation prize winners will all go to their chosen beneficiary schools in each of the LGUs in Metro Cebu.
Mega Cebu’s Official Jingle
The Mega Cebu Month also featured a jingle-making contest which came up with a jingle for the Mega Cebu program which will be used to play during awareness building and engagement activities with the different stakeholders.

Medi Baculpo’s “Moving Forward”, interpreted by Ralph Mallapre and lyrics by Adessa Otarra, was declared the champion of the competition. In second place was “Forward Mega Cebu” of Mel Libre, interpreted by Hannah Marie Rondez. While Dennis Martin’s “Live to Believe”, sang by Johar Lapasaran, finished third place in the competition.
Search for Mega Cebu Ambassadors
The candidates for the Search for Mega Cebu Ambassadors were also presented during the awards night, with each of the 13 LGUs in Metro Cebu represented by an ambassador and ambassadress. The Mega Cebu Ambassadors will be a pool of socially-conscious and forward-thinking young men and women, capable of becoming role models among their peers and being spokespersons of the Mega Cebu program.
The awarding ceremonies also featured the different sponsors, partners, organizers and the member LGUs of the Mega Cebu program.
