Makeup Shopping Cheat Sheet

Published

on

Ever wondering on how to pick the right shade of makeup for you, and therefore set the right budget for it? Worry no more! Here’s a makeup shopping cheat sheet that can guide you to choose the cosmetic product that matches for your tone.

1. For foundations
Test it on your jawline, never your wrist! Since department store lights are deceptive (and some formulas can oxidize or become darker over time), apply the closest shade and check an hour later in natural light. Best approach: bring pillboxes and ask the girl to squirt a small sample you can try at home.

2. For lip pencils
Get one that matches your lip color (works with everything), a red, a plum, and a brown. Why so many? You can use it change the shade of practically any lipstick you own, or to create that trendy (and oh so sexy!) ombre effect. Don’t spend too much; save for products where the premium ingredients really matter, like foundation and lipstick.

3. For lipsticks
Makeup guru Bobbi Brown says the most flattering tones are just one or two shades darker than your lip color. Test the shade on your top lip to compare! Don’t wear foundation when you’re checking different shades. If that lipstick alone makes your skin look healthier, it’s got the right undertone.

4. For Mascaras
The best ones are specialists. Curling mascaras have resins that blend lashes, lengthening ones have nylon fibers. Fluffy brushes add volume; spiky plastic bristles separate. But since you toss mascara after three months, stick to a budget and save for a really good eyelash curler.

5. For Bronzers
Pick a glitter-free bronzer you can use it everyday (you can always add highlighter on your upper cheek bones for party look). Get just two shades deeper than your natural color. If you have dry or aging skin, pick a cream or liquid bronzer so it also adds a youthful sheen.
