Make It Stick: Resolutions that Work

(NC) It’s that time of year again. As the champagne flutes and party hats get packed away until next December 31, minds turn from festive celebrations to New Year’s Resolutions. It seems like such a good idea at the time, but research shows that less than 10% of New Year’s Resolutions are actually achieved. How can you make yours stick? Stick to the “four BEs” below to increase your chances for success!

BE realistic. You’re not going to change your entire routine or personality overnight. Look for small, simple swaps that can make a big difference. Trying to eat right? If you’re on the go on all day, it’s simply not sustainable to imagine that you’re going to start making lunch from scratch. Instead, resolve to make better choices in your on-the-go lunch routine. Suggested for example is to simply try and swap fried food and burgers for fresh, customizable options. A vegetarian go-to shops are great for these kind of meals since veggie selection alone is enough to make a dietitian swoon.

BE scheduled. The best of intentions can’t change the reality of your busy schedule. Unless you book the time in advance, your resolution will easily fall by the wayside. Want to make it to the gym more often? Get the calendar of classes and choose the ones you’re going to attend.

BE public. Share your plans with those close to you. The more you’re accountable to others, the more likely you are to stick to your goals – fear of failing publicly is a strong motivator! And share your successes, too. Social media is a powerful tool to showcase your accomplishment and see how good the accolades can feel. Use tools like Facebook, or Twitter or Instagram.

BE positive. Change doesn’t happen overnight, and it doesn’t happen without bumps in the road. You’ll have face challenges and have successes, but a positive attitude and a can do mindset can take you far
