Magnitude 4.8 Quake Rocks Negros Southernmost Town
Ilo-Ilo City (PNA) — A magnitude 4.8 earthquake rocked Sipalay in Negros Occidental on Sunday evening.
Mr. Ramil Atando of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology-Roxas (Phivolcs-Roxas) said the shaker of tectonic in origin, was recorded around 9:07 on Sunday evening with its epicenter located 10 kilometers south of Sipalay City, Negros Occidental.
Atando said intensity 4 was felt in Sipalay while intensity 3 was also experienced in Negros Occidental’s southernmost town of Hinoba-an and Basay in the adjoining province of Negros Oriental.
The Phivolcs said no damage to property was reported during the earthquake that lasted for almost 10 seconds.No aftershocks have been recorded by Phivolcs following the earthquake.
Atando said the two southernmost towns of Negros Occidental often experienced an earthquake due to the underground movement of the fault area or the so-called Negros trench encompassing Southern Negros and across coastal areas in southern Iloilo towards neighboring Antique province and as far as Mindanao area.
Meanwhile, parts of Antique province was also jolted by a mild earthquake measuring at intensity 3.3 early this morning.
Phivolcs recorded the quake around 8:23 early Monday morning with its epicenter some 18 kilometers southwest of Culasi, Antique at a depth of 22 kilometers. (PNA) LAM/AJP/VLORQUIOLA
