LTO 7 Urges LGUs in Central Visayas to Conduct Drive Against Colorum Tricycles
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) 7 has ordered a crackdown on colorum motorcycles with sidecars, which are used for passengers or cargoes but are not registered with the agency.
LTO 7 OIC-Director Alita Pulga said local government units (LGUs), where these motorcycles with sidecars and tricycles operate, must help in their campaign against colorum units since the LGUs were the ones that issue franchise to tricycles and regulate their use.
Most tricycles used for passengers in Metro Cebu were uncontrolled and came up with their own fares, Pulga said.
A transport operator said tricycles should be cheaper than public utility jeepneys.
But tricycle drivers collect Php 7 as minimum fare despite a route of only one or two kilometers.
A jeepney charges Php 7 for the first five kilometers.
Under the law, motorcycles with sidecars must be registered either for purpose of carrying passengers or cargo, Pulga said.
Pulga said that if LTO approves and registers it as a passenger-type vehicle, it should secure a franchise as passenger vehicle. (PNA) RMA/EB/EDS
