Manila (PNA) — Flashflood and landslides threaten some parts of the Visayas due to the trough of the low-pressure area off Northern Samar, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Monday.

In an interview, PAGASA weather forecaster Alvin Pura said that as of 10 a.m., the LPA was estimated based on all available data at 720 kilometers east of Catarman, Northern Samar (13.0°N, 132.0°E).

According to Pura, the trough of this weather system will bring moderate to occasionally heavy rains in the regions of Eastern and Central Visayas which may trigger flash floods and landslides and light to moderate rains and thunderstorms in the regions of Western Visayas, Caraga, Northern Mindanao and Zamboanga Peninsula.

”Residents in these areas and local disaster risk reduction and management councils concerned are advised to be alert and take all the necessary precautionary measures and monitor updates on this weather disturbance,” PAGASA said in its 11 a.m. advisory.

Pura said the LPA has slim chance to intensify into a tropical depression but the weather agency continues to monitor it.

He noted that the weather bureau also monitors a new cloud cluster east of Mindanao which is expected to intensify into LPA.

He said once it develop into LPA, this weather disturbance has a high chance to intensify into a tropical cyclone since it is in the sea.

Once it intensifies into a tropical depression inside the country, it will be locally named “Kanor.”

According to Pura, the state weather bureau expects two to three cyclones to visit the country for the month of September.

Meanwhile, Pura said Metro Manila and the rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rains mostly in the afternoon or evening due to localized thunderstorms.

He said the convective activity brought about by intense heat triggers the formation of more cumulonimbus clouds or dark clouds associated with thunderstorms that bring rains in the afternoon or evening. (PNA) SCS/CLTC/FRBT (trainee)
