Local Organizations Launch “Roof for Relief” to Rehabilitate Typhoon-Ravaged Homes
Gawad kalinga, the Islands Group and LH Foundation, Inc. launched the “Roof for Relief” project that is aimed to rebuild the homes of 5,000 families whose homes have been destroyed in the Northern part of Cebu.
A super typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan) battered central Philippines two weeks ago, displacing 4.4 million people and forced 393,000 of them to fly to evacuation centers for deep dire need of help.
Yolanda was the strongest typhoon that ever landed in the planet this year. It had wind gust up to 235 mph. The National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council has tallied the casualties to 4, 011 so far and 1, 602 still missing. More than 18, 000 suffered injuries.
In Cebu, 95 % of houses and structures were utterly destroyed by the strong typhoon which hit last November 8. Roof for Relief will provide roofs for these shattered homes and hopes to rebuild them again with new safe houses which is also in ti,e for Christmas.
