Lights Out, Once More, For Earth Hour

An hour of darkness to keep the fire alive for the global fight against climate change.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has lent its voice to the annual Earth Hour set on March 19 calling every Filipino to switch off their lights with the rest of the world.

Provincial Director Peter Mangabat of DTI-Pangasinan encouraged people to switch off their lights for an hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. in solidarity with the global efforts to combat climate change.

He said the Earth Hour is a global grassroots movement for environmental awareness being organized by the World Wide Fund (WWF) to unite people to take action for the planet, proving that no individual action on climate change is too small and that no collective vision is too big.

The event is held worldwide annually towards the end of March, encouraging individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour as a symbol of their commitment to the planet.

From 2009 to 2013, the Philippines has earned the title “Earth Hour Hero Country” as the country topped the participation records.

Mangabat urged Pangasinenses to participate in this yearly activity by switching off or dimming their lights during the global lights out in their respective homes and communities.

“Let us all support the vision of WWF of going beyond the hour and help shine a light on climate action in taking a step against climate change from this hour and beyond,” he said. (MCA/AMM/PIA-1, Pangasinan)
