Palo, Leyte (PNA) — The success of an egg backyard production will definitely produce more opportunities for entrepreneurs in the province of Leyte, according to Governor Leopoldo Dominic Petilla.

Just recently, the province entered into an agreement with the Pilmico Foods Corporation and Terra Firma for the provision of 100 egg machine starter kits or cages with ready-to-lay hens under the “Mahalin Pagkaing Atin” campaign.

Pilmico will give kits to recipients that are yet to be chosen by the local government unit (LGU). Kits or aluminum cages will be sourced from the Ta-ala Farms that will provide recipients with necessary training.

Governor Petilla said that ultimately once the egg production goes massive; there will be value-adding projects that will make more income.

Also, he said that it will lessen the dependency of the province from other regions.

Petilla said that egg production industry in Leyte was destroyed by typhoon Yolanda although there are some in Babatngon town that are starting to recover.

Movers of the project identified Palo town as launching pad of the project, citing that the thrust of the local government is already into entrepreneurship.

“With entrepreneurship you will grow it better because people will respond not just as a production but as a business. The tendency for them is to grow it,” said Hendel Cabral, Pilmico Foods Corporation vice president for sales.

He added that they gave the 100 egg machine business kits to the province with the hope that the technology will be replicated. Each kit contains galvanized wire cage and 48 fully-vaccinated ready-to-lay hens.

“Recipients will be families who would need it and will handle and take care of it so they can show other families how to do it,” Cabral added.

He added that to date there are only about 30 million layers supplying the need for eggs of around 100 million Filipinos.

Engr. Bonnie C. Ta-ala, owner of the Ta-ala Farms, meanwhile, said that soon the backyard production of eggs will be taking over those that are into big egg poultry business. (PNA) LAP/PGLENA/EGR
