Landslide Evacuate Families in Dumanjug

About 10 families were forced to abandon their homes in Barangay Ylaya, Dumanjug town on Friday after heavy rains triggered a landslide that also caused partial damage to some houses.

Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (LDRRM) Officer, Richel Canete, said he led his responders to the area immediately after he received a distress call about the incident.

Canete said the situation prompted him to order a forced evacuation of the residents and transfer them at the nearby gymnasium.

“..Akong gi-assess ang sitwasyun ug nakita nako nga delikado sa mga pamilya nga magpabilin sa lugar atung mga orasa, mao nga ni decide dayun ko nga i-andam ang gym para sa evacuees ug pugus namo ang pagpabakwit sa mga taw kay lisud na ug masundan pa ang pagdahili sa yuta.” Canete said.

Jocelyn Mara-Mara, one of the evacuees, said a 20-meter cliff above her dwelling collapsed due to the persistent rain, causing the boulders to cave in and buried her house.

Early this month, Tropical Depression ‘Auring’ made landfall in Dinagat Island placing Cebu, as well as Eastern and Central Visayas, under Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 1.

Weather agency said that areas within the 300-kilometer radius to the tropical depression will experience moderate to heavy rains.

Mara-Mara said that they were outside when the landslide happened, adding that she was glad that her children were not playing at her lawn during the incident.

Maayo gani naa mi sa gawas pagkahitabu ug walay mga bata sa among tugkaran kay wala pa nakauli gikan sa eskwelahan, anha man gud na sila permi magduwa” Mara-Mara said.

Canete said that since the area is landslide prone, he plans to recommend before the LDRRM Council a temporary relocation site for the residents.

Human sa hitabo, akong i-recommend sa council nga i-relocate nalang jud ni ang mga taw deri para malikayan nga duna na unya makalas, landslide prone manni lugara” Canete added.

As of this writing, some residents were already permitted to go back to their respective home. (Chad Cordova Bacolod)
