Kaspersky Study Finds Majority of Single Men Open to Using AI on Dating Apps
Have you ever had doubts about the authenticity of your online date? According to new research by Kaspersky, the popular AI tool ChatGPT may be to blame.
In fact, Kaspersky’s “Date or DAIte?” survey of single men and women in the UK found that over 75% of all dating app users are considering using ChatGPT to help deliver the perfect chat-up line. And while that might seem harmless enough, the study found that more than half of single men (54%) surveyed admitted that they would consider using ChatGPT to trick a potential partner on a dating app, with the aim of appearing wittier or more intelligent in their quest for love.
But it’s not just men who are getting in on the ChatGPT action. Over half of single women surveyed said they would use the AI tool to speak to multiple potential partners at the same time, in a bid to increase their chances of finding love. And while the use of ChatGPT might seem like a harmless virtual ‘boost,’ the survey also raised concerns about the possibility of a new era of AI-based catfishing.
According to David Emm, Principal Security Researcher at Kaspersky, “Using AI such as ChatGPT to create flirty chat-up lines might seem harmless and a fun way to strike up a new conversation with a prospective partner, but those using dating apps should be aware that not everyone will be using it in good faith. Some may be using it to deceive, and as we have seen with photo doctoring, people can very easily pretend to be something they are not and lure others into unpleasant scenarios.”
Dating expert Crystal Cansdale echoes this sentiment, pointing out that authenticity is at the core of building relationships. “Despite how ‘real’ a ChatGPT generated message can come across, it will only get you so far and ultimately it is not real,” she warns.
So, if you’re thinking about using ChatGPT to enhance your dating game, it might be worth proceeding with caution. As Cansdale advises, “There’s also the matter of ChatGPT being used by scammers. People already need to be cautious of who they are talking to and ensure they are using safe apps that verify its users. These tools make it very easy for fraudsters to prey on the dating world, putting a lot of people at risk.”
