JVR Eyes Relocation of Manipis Elementary School
The Talisay city government is now looking for an ideal area as relocation site of the Manipis Elementary School (MES).
Talisay City Mayor Johnny V. De Los Reyes this morning during the Tapok Tapok Media Forum at the Cebu Business Hotel, Cebu City said he ordered barangay Manipis officials to help removed the big boulders that already reached the school premises.
The Mayor, who made an ocular inspection in the area last Thursday, said he has witnessed big stones and limestone boulders skidded from upward the hill and are now surrounding the school premises.
In fact the Mayor said there was one big boulder which entered into a classroom destroying its bamboo walling.
JVR said the incident causes fear among teachers and students prompting them to ask help from the mayor JVR for their transfer to a safe location.
The mayor said government will immediately prepare a supplemental budget for the purpose once they find a safe location together with project proposals and estimates from the engineering department, who is now tasked to make an assessment.
Meanwhile, information officer Dr. Ed Llamedo of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 7 who was also present during the said forum also recommended to JVR that stones around the school buildings should be made as an additional protection in case there will be landslides in the area.
Llamedo said the area is no longer safe for students and teachers are staying there almost everyday.
The DENR spokesman said there are only two reasons why the soil looses, “that is either by heavy rains and earthquake” which cause soil to move causing landslides or avalanche.
