For the second year in a row, Johnson & Johnson (Philippines), Inc. (JJPI) and Global Services (GS) Philippines were recognized as one of the country’s “Best Companies to Work For” in HR Asia’s Philippine Edition of the HR Asia Awards. Following their win last year, JJPI and GS were lauded for their diverse people programs including their drive to have the healthiest workforce by 2020.

The leading healthcare company surpassed industry averages in all three categories of the evaluation—CORE (collective organization for real engagement) at 4.27 out of a 5-point rating scale; SELF: Heart, Mind, and Soul, at 4.25; and GROUP: Think, Feel, Do at 4.38. Industry averages for these three categories were 3.9, 4.05, and 4.3, respectively.

Contenders in this year’s awards were given overall scores based on the total engagement of the company; focusing on the areas of culture and ethics, leadership, employee empowerment, intention and motivation, company behavior and advocacy, workplace sentiment, and team dynamics. JJPI and GS were given overall scores of 4.3.

J&J Philippines Director for Human Resources and Corporate Contributions Sean Zantua attributes their win to the company’s inclusive work environment that pro-actively responds to the evolving needs of their employees.

Promoting health in the workplace

J&J Philippines ensures that all its 1,200 employees have access to facilities and services that promote healthy movement, healthy eating, healthy mind, and an overall healthy workplace. These include free on-site gym access and exercise reimbursement program for employees, a newly-renovated campus cafeteria and a “Grab n’ Go” food area that offer healthy options for employees, and 24/7 access for employees and their families to work-life coaches and counselors to help manage stress, depression, and other mental health concerns.

These services are also supported by “Energy for Performance” courses that train employees on energy management, holistic health and wellness principles.

Keeping to their promise of promoting holistic health, JJPI and GS also encourage employees to prioritize spending time with their family through flexible work arrangements, a free on-site day care center, 14-week expanded maternity leaves, and 8-week extended paternity and adoption leaves.

Advancing diversity and inclusion

As the company grows the number of its employees, J&J Philippines has made it its mission to create a more inclusive and bias-free work environment.

They have upgraded facilities to include gender-neutral restrooms, conducted internal education campaigns on being an ally to the LGBTQ+ community, mandated “unconscious bias” training for all employees, and updated HR policies to include domestic and same-sex partners under their health care programs. They have also boosted support to the various Employee Resource Groups, such as Women’s Leadership & Inclusion, Open & Out, Generation Now, and Alliance for Diverse Abilities.

JJPI and GS have also promoted more women and millennial employees into key leadership positions in the company, hoping to have at least 50% of their leaders come from these two sectors by end- 2019.

“We believe in winning with people,” says Zantua. “Being awarded Best Company to Work For the second year in a row reaffirms our commitment to building a high-performance culture that fuels J&J Philippines’ success. The award pushes us to help more Filipinos lead longer, happier, and healthier lives.”
