Jeepney Ride Reminders
Riding the jeepney is the most common public transportation here in the Philippines. Especially when it’s weekend, we are set to go outside to be family or friends. Whether it is going to a nearby mall or going out-of-town, many take public transportation. It makes us all the more be in touch with the local culture. But we also have to remember that our experience (especially if we’ve just started to commute or if we’re new to the city,) will either be smooth or rough depending on our driver, our fellow passengers and sometimes, the quality of the jeepney. Take these tips into consideration when deciding to jump into a public ride:
1. Jeepneys have a set route. Once lost, ask the driver the way to get a jeepney to your destination. Don’t be afraid to seek the assistance of a traffic or police officer if they’re present.
2. Be watchful of your surroundings. In riding a jeepney, you’ll be sandwiched bwtween total strangers especially when the jeepney is full. Stay alert and take care of your belongings.
3. If you see someone or more importantly a group of individuals who seem to be suspicious like robbers (which can happen), trust your instincts and go down immediately. Lessen your risk of robbery by keeping your cellphones, iPods, jewelry and other valuables away. Ignore a stranger who is insistent in making small talk.
4. Reckless jeepney drivers are common. They go beyond the speed limit on busy streets and take abrupt turns. Grab onto the handles and hold tight to avoid accidentally harming your fellow passengers. If you’re pregnant or in a health condition, go down immediately. You always have the right to complain and tell the driver to keep it easy.
5. Avoid sleeping! Be alert all throughout your ride. You don’t want to miss your stop or your belongings when you wake up!
