Italy Ship Hits Control Tower, Kills 3
Reports say a cargo ship has slammed into a control tower in the Italian port of Genoa, killing at least three people.
An Italian news agency identified the ship as the Jolly Nero container ship of the Ignazio Messina & C. SpA shipping line.
Reports also state part of the tower collapsed into the water due to the accident.
At least 10 people were in the tower when the crash happened. Some are still believed trapped inside the area. At least four people have been rushed to nearby hospitals.
The accident prompted a nighttime search and rescue operation for others are feared thrown in the water when parts of the tower toppled down.
The cause of the accident is still unconfirmed.
The ship’s owner, Stefano Messina said he is still utterly shocked of the incident because “nothing like this has ever happened before”.
According to Corriere Della Serra newspaper, Genoa authorities are still investigating the crash. The ship has also been impounded and the captain is taken in for questioning.
