iOS 7: All The Details You Need On Apple’s Newest iOS
iOS 7, the latest version of Apple’s flagship mobile operating system is finally here. Apple CEO Tim Cook calls iOS 7 the “biggest change to iOS since the introduction of the iPhone,” so let’s take a look at just how big this change will be.
NEW LOOK:
According to TechCrunch,
- iOS 7 has a new font leading the way. It’s very skinny and clean.
- Instead of white bars on a black background, Apple will now tell you what kind of service coverage you have with five little dots, which are white and grey depending on how strong the signal is across a translucent background.
- The lock screen is changed for the first time in iOS’s history, with no more shine top or bottom bars for slide to unlock or the clock. Instead, Slide to unlock is translucent above the background image.
- Default app icons are now flatter.
- The notifications panel isn’t laced with dark grey linen anymore, but actually has a very flat look to it. There is a today section that lets you see friends’ birthdays, upcoming invitations, calendar, stocks, and a quick look at tomorrow.
- The apps all seem to have a white base, except for the stocks app which has a black background and the weather app, which shows motion in the background to convey the current weather.
- The keyboard is more white, than grey, with a translucency that lets you see what’s underneath the keyboard.
NEW FEATURES
CONTROL CENTER
– is the name of the new swipe-up menu that gives you quick access to commonly used functions. You can swipe up from the bottom of the display to bring up quick-access tools, like a Wi-Fi meter, brightness, Airplane mode, music controls, and access to AirPlay and AirDrop..
MULTITASKING
– double-tapping the home screen brings up not just tiny thumbnail icons of your open apps, but also a tall preview of what you’re looking at. Apple says that the new features let apps update in the background — without affecting battery life — and it has smart features to update certain apps during certain times of the day or when you have stronger wireless coverage.
SAFARI BROWSER
– improved full-screen browsing, gesture-based navigation, and a new flipping card-tab overview that is very similar to the interface in Google’s Chrome for iOS and Android. The separate search bar is gone and you can now perform searches right from the address bar. Safari for iOS also supports Apple’s new iCloud Keychain, which syncs passwords and credit card information across devices.
AIRDROP
– lets you share content with other iOS users through the Control Center. Airdrop supports iPhone 5, iPad 4th gen, iPad Mini
CAMERA & PHOTOS
– now offer four cameras at once at any time: the standard camera, video camera, panorama camera and block camera. You’ll be able to easily scroll between all of the available cameras. In addition to the Camera app, the Photo Library app has also been improved in iOS 7 as it will now automatically sort your images based on time and location.
SIRI
– features a predictably flat new interface and has been upgraded with new voices, so you can choose from either a female or male voice in English, French, or German, with more languages added over time. Siri can now control functions such as toggling Bluetooth or controlling brightness and playing back voicemail messages. The service can search Twitter, Bing, and Wikipedia to provide more information for queries.
iOS IN A CAR
– vehicle’s screen will be an extension of your iOS device as it’ll resemble its screen. You’ll be able to access music controls, make a phone call, and access messages all from within your car’s screen.
APP STORE
– shows popular app based on user’s location and also features automatic app updates in the background.
iTUNES RADIO
– lets you choose songs to listen to on demand, and it has the ability to curate radio stations based on particular songs, artists, albums, or genres. It’s very similar to how Pandora works.
Other new features include: notification sync across devices, FaceTime audio calls over Wi-Fi, better search in Mail, and the ability to block phone calls and activation lock for stolen iPhone.
iOS 7 full public launch is expect to roll out starting this fall, with developers can download a beta version on the iPhone today.
