Indian Engineers Introduce ‘Anti-Rape’ Undergarment
The number of sexual assaults that have occurred over the past few months in India have drawn increased public attention. After an Indian woman died in December due to injuries suffered from being gang raped on a bus in New Delhi, personal devices designed to protect against sexual assault began to emerge, but none were as shocking as this invention.
Three engineer students from the SRM Institute of Science and Technology in Tamil Nadu, India, have designed anti-rape underwear capable of shocking would-be attackers with 3,800 kilovolts, about the voltage of a small stun gun. The underwear is also equipped with GPS to track the wearer’s location and capable of sending text alerts to police and family members in the event of an attack.
Engineer suggested that the invention is a good idea because it takes the government too long to react and make policy.
“Since the law makers take ages to come up with just laws and even after that, women are unsafe. Hence, we have initiated the idea of self‐defense which protects the women from domestic, social and workplace harassment,” they added.
