How to Make Your Own Candles

on

Decorate your home with your own scented candles in this easy step-by-step guide. There’s nothing quite like a beautiful candle flickering away in your lounge room, not to mention the lovely scent it spreads throughout your home!

Well, what if we told you making your own candles is much easier than you think? With our step-by-step guide, you’ll be able to create your own collection and signature fragrance. Burn them at home, or give them away as a gift!

What You’ll Need:

  •   A bunch of old jars or containers. You can even use some old jam jars or drinking glasses.
  •   Candle wax (from your local art and craft store)
  •   Candle wick (from your local art and craft store)
  •   A small rod or skewer to hold the wick in place over the jar
  •   An old pan to heat the wax in
  •   Scented oils (optional)
  •   Colouring (optional)

Procedures:

Step 1: Setting the Wick

Cut your wick to the appropriate size of your jar, ensuring there’s a bit sticking out so you can handle it easily. Tie the wick to the rod or skewer and place it across the top of the jar. You want the wick to be sitting in the middle of the jar. If your wick is moving around too much, add a bit of hot glue to the bottom and stick.

Step 2: Melting the Wax

Using your old pot, melt the wax over low heat. Once it has completely melted, add your desired scent and coloring. Stir it through and let the wax cool a little before pouring. You’ll need to repeat this step for each desired fragrance and color.

Step 3: Pouring the Wax

Holding your rod or skewer in place, gently pour the wax into each jar. Be careful not to overfill the jars – around 1cm from the rim is an ideal amount. Let them cool and set. If you’re moving the jars to another spot, be sure not to bump them too much and fix up the wicks that might have moved from the center.

STEP 4: Trimming the Wick

Once your candles are properly set (this might be overnight), untie the wicks from the rod/skewer and trim them down, leaving enough room for you to light and burn. Leave the candles for a day allowing them to set properly and then burn away. Too easy! (Adapted by Jessy Pearl)
