How to Make Fabulous Fast Food from Fresh Food
Fresh food has more flavor, more nutrition and more satisfaction than prepared, packaged options and the little extra time involved in prepping is eclipsed by the major payoff from eating well.
Former Bachelorette Jillian Harris is a designer, TV host, fresh food lover and the spokesperson for LG’s Home Appliances. The Vancouver-based foodie loves cooking with tasty seasonal, fresh food options. Here, she shares her tips on how to make fresh food a fast food:
Meal planning is the key to eating fresh. Take a look at the week ahead and think about what everyone feels like eating, look up some quick recipes, make your list and stock up on your fresh ingredients. After grocery shopping, set aside some time to do some basic food prep. Wash and chop fruits and veggies, marinate meats, do whatever you can ahead of time so meals come together in a snap. Don’t forget your fresh herbs which add a healthy dash of flavor.
In-season fruits and veggies pack more flavor, so make sure you’re choosing in season, local foods. Buy as much as you will use during the week so nothing spoils. This can be tricky, but when selecting recipes, try picking ones that share some common ingredients so you can use up your fruits and veggies while they’re still fresh.
Jillian points out that proper food storage can make a world of difference when making nutritious, flavorful meals. “Where you keep your food is very important – especially when you’re cooking with fresh ingredients. We all know the standard storage procedures – potatoes in the cupboard, vegetables in the crisper, and so on. But did you know that the latest refrigeration technology makes it even easier? Imagine two refrigerators in one. The LG Door-in-Door keeps food fresher longer thanks to the Smart Cooling Plus System and its unique third-door design, giving you quick access to the foods you use most. This type of divided refrigerator is the most innovative idea yet. When your schedule changes as much as mine does, it can be a real life-saver.”
Make cooking a family affair. Nothing beats reconnecting with your family over the preparation of a meal. Throw on some music, grab a glass of wine and make dinner together. It’s a great opportunity to work together, chat and teach your kids critical cooking and nutrition basics.
