Holidays Saw Huge Demand in Mobile Internet Connectivity
Telecommunications provider Globe said that internet traffic spiked up in the months of November until the end of 2020, posting a 12 percent spike in customer usage on Facebook during Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, based on the company’s internal data, in a statement given on Thursday.
This comes as more people on heavily depend on social media platforms, as the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) show no signs of stopping soon.
Aside from Facebook, Globe added that virtual meeting apps like Zoom and Skype were also consistently used during weekdays, only experiencing a slight drop on weekends, as workers and students take a rest from working from home and online modules for distance learning.
Various telecommunication providers in the country are also answering the calls for better internet connectivity in the country as 1,300 new cell sites were built in the previous year, while 11,529 sites were upgraded to 4G or LTE for faster data connectivity.
DITO Telecommunity built 1,900 cell sites, while Smart Communications had 1,500 cell sites upgraded for LTE. (GFB)
