In their vision of empowering mothers to look out for the welfare of their children, the City Nutrition Committee (CNC) organizes Primary Health Care (PHC) Associations. Pioneered in Malusay, one of geographically isolated barangays of the city, the CNC thru the Barangay Nutrition Committee formed the Malusay Primary Health Care Association (MALPRIHECA).

The association organized mainly to provide health and nutrition services is sustained by the never-ending support of the Barangay Council and the hard work done by the barangay health and nutrition staff. It was set up to guide mothers and caregivers to apply good health and nutrition practices as they take care for their children. To be a member of the association, one must be able to finish mother craft courses and be active in health and nutrition advocacy in the community. They are to practice proper nutrition and help reduce malnutrition starting with their respective families that is expected to radiate to the whole community.

The organization also included livelihood program incentives and financing schemes for its members. With a system that not only empowers the community through additional income but also promoted proper nutrition and health practices, the barangay is well on its way in getting rid of malnutrition in the future.

With its contribution to sustainable nutrition education in the community, MALPRIHECA’s practice is truly worthy of the 2018 Good Nutrition Practice Award bestowed by the Central Visayas Regional Nutrition Committee.
