GT Northeast Academy to Employ Singapore Math in Teaching Mathematics
GT Northeast Academy, a new private learning institution located north of Cebu in Liloan, will be employing the Singapore Math program in teaching mathematics to its pre-school, elementary, and high school students.
Originating as a method of making math more understandable to children in the prosperous tiny island-nation, Singapore Math has consistently ranked as the leading program in the world in the past two decades as evaluated by various international studies.
GT Northeast Academy is working hand in hand with the Galileo Enrichment Learning Center, which introduced the Singapore Math to the Philippines, to upgrade its programs by incorporating this innovative way of teaching mathematics.
“Singapore Math translates math concepts into models that help students visualize the operations. Numbers are represented by boxes and brackets, and the positions of these boxes determine which operation to use,” said Galileo Enrichment Learning Center.
This way, students do not begin by memorizing dozens of formulas and instead break down mathematical problems to their simplest form to solve them. Singapore Math therefore equips students with analytical and problem-solving skills that encourage critical thinking.
“By utilizing Singapore Math we hope to not only improve our educational programs but more importantly contribute to the uplifting of the community,” said Leonora Salvane, GT Northeast Academy owner who is also the founder of beauty product manufacturer GT Cosmetics.
Recently inaugurated last March 2014 and beginning its operations for the school year 2014-2015, the GT Northeast Academy presently has 15 classrooms catering to preschool, elementary, and first year high school or grade 7 students.
GT Northeast Academy also makes use of a computerized school system, including the utilization of Digital Light Processing projectors for interactive learning and a unique ID system wherein parents will be notified of their students’ entry and exit via SMS.
Limiting to 20-25 the number of students in a classroom, GT Northeast Academy also features all fully air-conditioned classrooms and facilities, including the administration offices, principal’s office, faculty lounge, library, canteen, chapel, and even the waiting room for parents are fully air-conditioned.
GT Northeast Academy will open another high school level by 2015, thus the construction of the 3rd and 4th floors of the school building will start this January in order to finish before June of this year. The school just finished its gymnasium and will soon commence construction of its swimming pool. It is also equipped with 3 school buses.
