GSIS Grants Scholarship to 400 Members’ Dependents

The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) has chosen 400 new scholars for Academic Year (AY) 2018-2019 under the GSIS Scholarship Program (GSP).

This provides opportunities for low-income GSIS members to send their dependents to colleges and universities that provide quality education.

The selection of scholars from 3,000 applicants was based on the following: annual basic salary, length of service and course category, as well as other eligibility requirements including members’ status of employment, premium payments for the last six months, salary grade, sectoral group, and school where the dependents are accepted or enrolled.

Over the years, amendments to the program have been introduced to make it more equitable and responsive particularly to the members in the low-income bracket.

Over the years, slots were increased from only 25 in 1998 to 400 in 2016, except in 2017, when 600 slots were given in celebration of GSIS’ 80th year.

Nominees of members who have the lowest annual basic salary have been given priority in the scholarship grant.

The program was also expanded to include sectoral groups such as solo/single parents, persons with disability, members of indigenous groups, and Permanent Total Disability Pensioners (PTD) below 60 years of age, who have incoming freshmen-dependents accepted in or currently taking up any 4 or 5 year course identified by the Commission on Higher Education.

Of the 400 grantees for AY 2018-2019, 45 came from sectoral groups while four (4) were PTD pensioner-grantees.

Under GSP, scholars are entitled to the actual cost of tuition and miscellaneous fees not exceeding Php 40, 000 per academic year. They will also receive a monthly allowance of Php 3, 000.

Scholars who will graduate with highest honors will receive additional incentives of Php 20, 000 for cum laude, Php 30, 000 for magna cum laude, and Php 50, 000 for summa cum laude.

GSP was launched in 1998 as part of GSIS’ corporate social responsibility program.
