Google Spices Up Iconic ‘G’ Logo After Nearly a Decade
Google has updated its iconic ‘G’ logo for the first time in nearly 10 years, introducing a more refined gradient design that subtly alters the company’s visual identity across mobile platforms.
This comes as the redesigned logo began appearing on Sunday within the Google iOS app and is now included in the Google 16.8 beta for Android, according to 9to5Google. While it still features the familiar Product Sans typeface, the update replaces the four solid red, yellow, green, and blue segments with smoother, more polished gradient transitions.
The shift adds dimension to the logo and results in a more visually balanced appearance.
The update marks the first significant change since 2015, when Google transitioned from a serif to a sans-serif font and introduced the circular four-color ‘G’ to better align with mobile-first platforms. That rebranding coincided with the company’s transformation from a web search tool into a multifaceted tech ecosystem spanning hardware, cloud computing, and AI.
The company has yet to confirm whether the redesigned ‘G’ will extend to its full six-letter wordmark or to other major apps such as Google Chrome, Maps, or Gmail. Moreover, no official announcement or detailed explanation has been issued regarding the update.
