Globe Announces Winners of 3rd Cebu Media Excellence Awards
Leading telecommunications company Globe Telecom announced the winners of the 3rd Cebu Media Excellence Awards who have shown exemplary communication skills in bringing social issues to the attention of the public via print, broadcast, or digital media.
The outstanding media professionals and digital media practitioners were feted during the awarding ceremonies held in Cebu Marriott Hotel on September 25 as part of the Cebu Press Freedom Week celebration. They bested 524 other entries in the nine categories.
“We at Globe believe that nation building starts with better communication and the help of agents that can inspire, move, and stand up for change. We give recognition to these very people who have filled these spots through the help of their medium. These people have campaigned for ideas, old and new, made their voices heard, and have successfully made a ripple across society for the past year. We give these people in media the rightful salute they deserve and hope that with all of us together, we can create a wonderful world,” said Yoly Crisanto, Senior Vice President, Globe Corporate Communications during her opening remarks.
Bagging the Reporter of the Year for Print award for the second time in a row was Ador Vincent Mayol of Cebu Daily News who wrote a four-part series entitled “Children Need Time to Heal”. Explanatory/Investigative Story of the Year for Print/Online was awarded to the Sunstar team composed of Rebelander Basilan, DavinciMaru, Gerome Dalipe and Cherry Ann Lim for their write-up, “Cordova: Cybersex Capital?” Each winner received P20,000 and a trophy while the editors got P5,000 and a plaque.
Columnist of the Year Atty. Ruphil Bañoc of Sunstar who wrote “Silot sa Pagpanapaw” took home P15,000 and a trophy while Photojournalist of the Year Arni Aclao of Sunstar received P10,000 and a trophy for his entry “Madridejos (Aerial View-Super typhoon Yolanda left this coastal community in Madridejos, Bantayan Island, Cebu in ruins).”
Patricia Andrea Pateña of TV 5 garnered two awards:Reporter of the Year for Television for her “Kuwang sa Pangga” and Explanatory/Investigative Story of the Year for Television for the same entry. Patena received a total of P40,000 and two trophieswhile her editor got P10,000 and two plaques.
For radio, top recognition was again accorded to Astra ZinaLogarta of DYHP for “Alternative learning system “Gilusad sa CPDRC alang sa mga inmates nga wala kahuman sa pagtungha.”Logarta who also won in the same category last year, received P20,000 and a trophy while her editor was given P5,000 and a plaque.
Ruben Licera (INewMedia.org) also won both digital media awards: Blogger of the Year and Social Media Advocate. Each award has a trophy and P20,000cash prize.
Teresa Chan, President of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry led the distinguish panel of judges in the selection of winning entries except for Explanatory/Investigative Story of the Year for Print/Online and Television which were handled by the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ).
Chan was joined by Ahmed Cuizon, Regional Director, LTFRB 7; Teresa Fernandez, Executive Director, Lihok Filipina Foundation; Angel Guerrero, Editor-In-Chief, Adobo Magazine; Angel Antonio, President and General Manager, Aspac Advertising Incorporated; and Andrei Tani, Executive Director, Virus Digital.
