Five Homemade Beauty Treatments
You’ll be surprised by what you already have at home that can treat pimples, remove makeup, reduce cellulite and more!
Aspirin
The anti-inflammatory properties of aspirin aren’t just good for your aches and pains — they’re also good for your skin! Aspirin contains salicylic acid, a common ingredient in many acne treatments, and it can be applied to breakouts to reduce redness and swelling.
To use, place two or three aspirin tablets in a glass with just enough water to start dissolving it. Once it begins to get soft, use your finger or a spoon to crush the aspirin to a paste. Apply it directly on the skin, coating each pimple, and leave overnight.
Coffee Grounds
By the end of a busy week, do you have a pile of coffee grounds in your trash? Instead of throwing them out, put them to good use fighting cellulite!
Cellulite is a common type of fat deposit that has many causes, but you can lessen its appearance if you promote circulation and get fluid moving through your lymphatic system. The active ingredient in most cellulite creams is caffeine, which can be found in the leftovers from your morning joe. Simply put the used grounds (the coarser the better) in a Tupperware container with a few tablespoons of olive oil. During your next shower, massage your skin with the mixture, paying special attention to areas with cellulite. The exfoliation will soften your skin, and the caffeine in the grounds will get your systems flowing.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is a perfect natural moisturizer. It can be used in small amounts as a general body lotion or lip moisturizer, rubbed on the belly during pregnancy to prevent stretch marks, applied overnight as an intensive moisturizer or even used as a shaving lotion or after-shave cream.
To use, emulsify a small amount between your palms until it is warm and soft, and then rub it into your skin or lips. If you are prone to oily skin on your face, however, use it sparingly, as it can clog pores.
Olive oil
If you have very sensitive skin on your face, olive oil makes a great natural makeup remover, especially under the eyes. You can massage olive oil directly into the skin, and then wipe off with a moist face cloth, or put it on a cotton pad and wipe makeup off directly. And as an added benefit, it will moisturize your skin as you remove your makeup!
Like most makeup removers, though, olive oil should only be used topically on the face — be sure not to get any in your eyes.
Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar makes a great hair rinse. It helps remove residue and build-up, keeps your hair soft and shiny and helps restore the natural pH balance of your scalp.
To use, mix a half tablespoon of vinegar with one cup of water. Pour or spray the mixture on your hair after shampooing instead of conditioner. You can either rinse it out or leave most of the vinegar in — either way, the smell will disappear as your hair dries. If you have very oily hair, you can use the rinse multiple times a week. If your hair gets dry very easily, stick with once a week or every other week.
