Fisherfolk Head Wants Establishment of Fish Feed Mill

This year’s regional fisherfolk leader has requested government to establish a feed mill for the production of feeds for fish.

Jaime Yosores, who is the current Mangingisdang Direktor for Cagayan Valley, said there have been several trainings that government agencies have given to fisherfolk organizations to include fish feed processing.

However, Yosores said they could not fully apply what they have learned from those trainings because they do not have the capability to procure the needed equipment in manufacturing the feeds.

“We are very thankful to the government agencies that have been assisting us but we are looking further to those who could help us install the needed equipage for the feed mill production,” Yosores said.

Yosores added that if they could produce fish feeds in the region, it will contribute to the food security agenda of the government.

Having a fish feed mill, according to Yosores, would also help them cope with the increasing prices of commercial fish feeds.

For his part, Brainard Peter Liwanag of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 2, said they will try to help the fisherfolk group to establish the feed mill.

For the meantime, Liwanag said they train the groups to produce organic fish feeds to help reduce their expenses in buying commercial ones.

On the other hand, to increase fish production in the communities, Apple Joy Usquisa, aquaculturist II, said they have started conducting fingerling dispersal in the rivers, lakes and small water impounding in some of the identified towns of Region 2. (MDCT/OTB/PIA 2-Cagayan)
