Fiber Optic Traffic System Turned Over To Mandaue City
Mandaue City, Cebu – Triune Electronic Systems, Inc. on Monday turned over the first of its kind fiber optic traffic control system worth P39.9 million to Mandaue City after it underwent rigid testing and passed over three natural calamities.
Peter Ong, president of Triune Electronic Systems, Inc. hands over a symbolic key to Mayor Jonas Cortes in a simple ceremony held at the Bantay Mandaue 161 command center located at the side of the city hall.
Digital Traffic Signals
The project include the installation of digital traffic signals in nine major intersections, installation of 36 Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in these intersections, installation of nine giant monitors, computers, board map, control panel, among others at the command center.
The project started in August and completed in December, 2013. It passed rigid testing including three calamities, namely: 7.2 magnitude earthquake on October 15, November 8 super typhoon “Yolanda”, and Nov. 5 Tornado.
Fiber Optics
“This is more advance than the traffic system in Metro Manila since this uses fiber optics,” said Ong, adding that fiber optics, signals and images travels as fast as the light.
“The CCTV cameras serve as deterrent and help curb crimes and the modern traffic signals saves manpower, enabling us to deploy our traffic enforcers to other areas,” said Mayor Cortes.
According to Mayor Cortes, this is phase 1 and that the second phase will include the installation of similar system up to the barangays.
Ong for his part added the infrastructure in phase one will enable the installation of flood monitoring system and the message or advisory boards in strategic places, remote control of street lights for energy saving measures.
Remote Controlled Traffic System
Under the present system, traffic can be controlled by remote at the command center which means that through the monitors, the operator can manually make the green light longer if there is a long line of traffic. Most of the time, the traffic is automatically set at the command center.
Capturing Road Accidents
Ong explained that through the map board, one can see which colors are flashing in the nine major intersection. During the press conference which followed, some road accidents that happened late last year and early this year that was captured by the CCTV cameras were shown. (Mandaue News Service)
