Fellowship
Why do I need to become a member of a particular Church? What is the meaning of being in fellowship with other believers of Jesus Christ?
“So in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.” Romans 12:5
When you believed and received the Lord Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior (Romans 10:9), you have been given the privilege to become His child, God’s child (John 1: 12). We know that this opportunity is not or was not done through our works, good works for that matter (Ephesians 2: 8-9) because we are sinners (Romans 3:23). It is through the grace of God only. Grace is unmerited favor -we don’t deserve it, but God gave it anyway (because of love–John 3:16).
Through Jesus Christ, this grace was or is made possible (Romans 6:23). Now that we’re children of God already, we’re part of His family–the group of people who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord (who saved them from sins, from the eternal damnation in hell).
God created you for relationship, then. You cannot grow as a believer all by yourself, without the other people who hold the same kind of trust, around you. Fellowship with other people who share the same faith as you is necessary, to keep you accountable, to help you learn about God and His Word, to pray for each others’ needs, to encourage one another, and to help you mature in your faith. We need them to help us grow in our faith walk with Jesus. The salvation of the soul is through faith only in the Lord Jesus Christ, nothing else.
“Not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:25
