Father Killed 2-year Old Son

A two-year old boy who was still asleep was slaughtered by his own father using a sharp kitchen knife inside their house at Sitio Zapanta in Barangay Tejero, Cebu City this morning.

Initial investigation conducted by the police revealed that 28-year old Obet Cañete works as a truck helper, but his common-law wife Alice Villacarlos said the suspect is believed to be suffering from a nervous breakdown.

It was reported that Cañete has been brought several times already to the mental ward of the Don Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (DVSMMC) after he showed abnormality of his physical and mental behavior.

Villacarlos told the reporters that Cañete showed again his abnormal behavior at around 5 o’clock in the morning Thursday arming himself with a knife. His common-law wife managed to disarm him of the weapon.

“Ako na unta kadto nga nakuha ang kutsilyo apan nailog niya pagbalik gikan nako. Ako ra g’yud siya nga giingnan nga ayaw g’yud intawon dagmali ang bata,” Villacarlos said.

Villacarlos went out of the house and sought help from their neighbors, but when she returned to the house she already found her child already slaughtered by Cañete by slashing the boy’s neck.

The lifeless body of the boy was still wearing a diaper and was lying on the floor. Responding policemen and tanods arrested Cañete and disarmed him of the bladed weapon, then brought him to Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center.

As of this writing, police homicide probers are still investigating the case. No decision yet whether a criminal charge for parricide will be filed against the suspect.
