The remains of former Senator and trade union leader Ernesto “Boy” Herrera will be brought to Cebu on Wednesday, his son, Ernest Herrera said.

Herrera succumbed to cardiac arrest on Thursday in a private hospital in Metro Manila, where he was confined for more than a week. He was 73.

Ernest Herrera, who is currently serving the Cebu City government, said the family still has no definite plans yet for the burial since they have to discuss it first with the rest of the family.

The late senator was survived by his wife and four children. He hailed from Samboan, a municipality in southern Cebu.

He also had roots in Bohol, where he served as congressional representative in the first district from 1998 to 2001.

He was a member of the House of Representatives during the 8th, 9th, and 10th congresses.

Herrera served as senator from 1987 to 1998. He also served as the president of the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP), advocating the rights of the workers.

He authored the first revision of the Labor Code in 1989 that legalized contractualization.

He was also known for his role as a member of the Agrava Fact Finding Board that investigated the assassination of democracy icon Benigno ‘Ninoy’ Aquino Jr.

Herrera said his father’s wake is at the Heritage Park in Taguig City to give time for his former colleagues in the Senate and the House to pay their last respects. (PNA) SCS/EB/PJN
