Environmentalist Pushes for Bike Lanes, Walk Ways
● Environmentalist calls out to government to ‘pour in resources’ for ‘better transportation’.
After Thursday’s jeepney holiday that paralyzed most of the activities in Metro Cebu, environmentalist renews demand for bike lanes and wider walkways from the government.
“I think it’s high time for the public to demand that public spaces be able to accommodate the rest of the commuting public through sustainable transportation bike lanes, and wide walk ways,” said Vince Cinches of Road Revolution, an organization which promotes biking and walking.
Cinches said the government should cash out for better transportation.
“The government should help the public out of this hostage situation by “pouring in resources” for “a better transportation,” he said.
Cinches, who uses his bicycle often, said they have already been telling the public for the last many years that it is high-time motorists share the road to the public and avoid being stranded in transport strike.
“Its high time that motorist share the road to the public, otherwise they will remain hostage by transport strike, fuel price hike, and even pollution,” Cinches said.
“It is high time that we should have a better city and transportation planning,” he added.
It can be recalled that the Road Revolution campaign, espoused by environmental lawyer Antonio Oposa in 2011, closed Cebu City’s main roads for one day.
The purpose of the campaign is to show to the public that people can still move around the city by walking or biking.
