Duterte to Witness Wrecking of 68 Luxury Cars at Port Irene
President Rodrigo Roa Duterte is set to travel to Port Irene in this town tomorrow to personally witness the condemnation and public destruction of 68 illegally imported luxury cars at the freeport.
Lawyer Raul Lambino, chief executive officer of the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA), said the luxury vehicles are supposed to be included in the first set of contraband vehicles condemned last March 14, 2018 but were excluded due to some legal impediments.
“This is in compliance with the President’s directive to destroy contraband motor vehicles in special economic zones to serve as a strong warning to smugglers,” Lambino said.
He said the 14 units that were earlier destroyed on March 10 and the 68 units that will be condemned during the visit of the President are part of the more than 800 contraband vehicles imported to the province via the Port Irene.
Aside from the condemnation and public destruction of 68 illegally imported luxury cars , Lambino said they will also present to the President the five major projects of CEZA that will be simultaneously undertaken within the Eco-zone and Freeport starting this year.
Secretary Lambino said the projects include the construction of a sanitary landfill to address issue on solid waste management, construction of a warehouse, establishment of a commercial center, building of a financial technology hub and the rehabilitation of the San Vicente seaport in Sta. Ana town.
CEZA officials are optimistic that these projects will contribute to jobs generation, boost economic activities at the Eco-zone and contribute to national progress.
An estimated 1,500 crowd composed of national, local and barangay officials, representatives of non-government organizations and residents from this town and nearby municipalities will join the President in witnessing the destruction of the said vehicles. (MDCT/OTB/PIA 2-Cagayan)
