DTI Holds Forum to Boost Retail Sector
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) hosted the 2024 Wholesale and Retail Trade Forum on December 2 at the AIM Conference Center. The event aimed to strengthen the wholesale and retail trade sector and prepare it for long-term growth.
DTI Secretary Cristina A. Roque highlighted the sector’s significance, noting its contribution of PHP 4.4 trillion to the 2023 gross domestic product and its role in employing over 10.3 million Filipinos.
“The wholesale and retail trade sector is the backbone of our economy,” said Secretary Roque. “The DTI, together with the Philippine Retailers Association (PRA) and Supply Chain Management Association of the Philippines (SCMAP), is committed to ensuring this sector thrives in a Bagong Pilipinas. Together, we will foster sustainable and inclusive growth to empower businesses and create quality jobs for all Filipinos.”
The forum brought together stakeholders to develop a job blueprint. This plan, a joint initiative of the DTI, PRA, and SCMAP, focuses on creating quality jobs, improving supply chain efficiency, and adopting digital technologies to support businesses.
PRA President Bobby Claudio expressed optimism about the blueprint’s potential to drive economic progress. “The retail sector is ready to embrace innovation and enhance the customer experience. This blueprint provides a clear roadmap to achieve those goals while contributing to the nation’s economic growth,” he said.
SCMAP President Dennis Llovido emphasized the importance of logistics in supporting the retail sector. “A strong supply chain is essential for the success of the retail sector. We are committed to working with our partners to improve efficiency and ensure the smooth flow of goods from producers to consumers,” he stated.
The forum gathered key players from retail, wholesale, and other industries to discuss strategies for building a stronger, more inclusive, and resilient retail sector. (ASC)
